Ignite Show shines spotlight on YMCA of the Rockies

Date: 03 May 2023

As the National Movements adopt YMCA Vision 2030 into their strategic planning, that process then moves to the local associations.

One local organisation that is successfully implementing Vision 2030 across all four Pillars is the YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park, Colorado, USA.

The second edition of the Ignite Show, live on May 9 2023, features a close-up look at the programmes and how they align with Vision 2030.

“It’s encouraging and exciting to see local YMCA associations like YMCA of the Rockies, and not just the national ones, aligning with Vision 2030 in projects on the ground,” said Carlos Sanvee, World YMCA Secretary General. “This is the way of the future”.

Aligning to YMCA Vision 2030

YMCA of the Rockies, both a YMCA and a hotel/cabin vacation destination, hosted the National General Secretaries (NGS) Annual Conference this year 27-29 May. They presented to the group their overall strategy to a group of 90-plus leaders and then a more detailed look at how they are addressing each Pillar.

Like many YMCAs in the United States, YMCA Rockies had previously done little to address Sustainable Planet. Some of its initiatives came directly from the staff, who encouraged recycling and reduced plastic use – and they are already making a big impact. For instance, it replaced the plastic wrap used for linens with reusable vinyl bags – and eliminated over a million feet (about 305,000 meters) of plastic wrap waste and saved tens of thousands of dollars each year.

CEO Julie Watkins shared the YMCA’s 2022 Strategic Plan, noting how similar it was to Vision 2030.

“We had clearly put it together well before Vision 2030 was adopted at World Council”, she said. “And we noticed how our five strategic priorities fit almost identically with the four Pillars of Vision 2030. From there it was very simple to align our programs and projects under those four pillars”.
